NCAA Basketball: Top 20 early transfer portal pickups in 2023 offseason
10. Cobe Williams – Louisiana Tech to Tulsa
2022-23 stats: 18.8 ppg and 4.1 apg
Williams had a breakout offensive campaign this past season, leading the Bulldogs in scoring in 23 games played. He was in double figures in all but one game, including a season-high 26 points versus Louisiana. The 5’11 playmaking guard also went for 23 points, 11 assists, and five steals against Stephen F. Austin.
Williams also was a multi-time all-league defender and now reunites with his old coach Erik Konkol at Tulsa. They went 5-25 last season and need plenty of new talent but if leading scorer Sam Griffin returns, become one of the better backcourts in the AAC next season.
9. Demarcus Sharp – Northwestern State to Austin Peay
2022-23 stats: 19.5 ppg and 5.0 apg
Sharp was the Southland Player of the Year in his lone season with the Purple Demons, nearly leading them to the NCAA Tournament. He had a number of big outings, including a career-high 40 points at Texas A&M-Corpus Christie.
The guard is one of several players to follow head coach Corey Gipson to Austin Peay, who finished dead last in the Atlantic Sun Conference. It’s expected to be a complete rebuild but Sharp becomes the top player on the roster. And in a league that’s set to lose a fair amount of talent, could become a candidate to win another Player of the Year award.
