7. Jon Scheyer – Duke

A talented guard from the northern suburbs of Chicago, Scheyer starred at Duke in the late 2000’s and helped the Blue Devils win the national title in 2010. After a brief professional playing career, he joined Coach K’s coaching staff in 2014, rising to associate head coach four seasons later. When Krzyzewski retired last season, Scheyer was named the next head coach of the Blue Devils and has spent the last year trying to replace that legend.

Scheyer is an elite recruiter and helped bring in the top recruiting class in the nation to Durham this past season. Obviously, the biggest change was going to be how Scheyer adjusted to sitting in the head coaching chair, and that work has still just begun. His Blue Devils won the ACC Tournament and played significantly better ball late in the year before falling in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

This was actually a good start for Duke, even if they couldn’t win the ACC regular season title in a rather weak season for the conference. It’s important to remember that Scheyer is not Coach K. Replacing a legend is not easy, but Scheyer did decent work at his alma mater in his first season and will have years to live up to those standards. Bigger things could be on the horizon for the Blue Devils, but it’s hard to not be a little disappointed when the nation’s best recruiting class gets bounced in the opening weekend of the Big Dance.
