NCAA Basketball: 20 early team winners of 2023 transfer portal offseason
13. TCU Horned Frogs
The Frogs are set to lose a lot of talent on the roster, including leading scorer Mike Miles. But the program has done a very good job in filling the holes, landing a trio of newcomers. The first pickup was arguably the best in Jameer Nelson Jr., a transfer guard from Delaware. He led the team with 20.6 ppg and 3.6 apg on 45% shooting from the field.
Nelson was in double figures in every single game this past season, including four games of at least 30 points. One of them was a career-high 39 points on 13/21 shooting against UNC Wilmington. He’s also a former All-CAA defender and that makes him a good fit with new head coach, Jamie Dixon.
Another guard that joins TCU is Trey Tennyson. He’s a 6’4 transfer from Texas A&M-Corpus Christie, who led the team in scoring at 15.7 ppg on 40% shooting from three-point range. Tennyson had eight games of at least 20 points, including 28 points on 6/10 shooting from three-point versus New Orleans.
To replace big man Eddie Lampkin is Essam Mostafa, a 6’9 and 250-pound center from Coastal Carolina. He averaged 12.4 ppg and 10.0 rpg and had 16 double-doubles on the season. He was one of the most productive players in all of the Sun Belt and TCU is hoping that translates well enough at the Big 12 level next year.
