NCAA Basketball: 10 most important transfer portal battles left of 2023 offseason
8. Primo Spears – Georgetown Hoyas
2022-23 season stats: 16.0 ppg and 5.3 apg
Recruiting battle: Kansas vs Florida State
It happened on a forgettable Georgetown roster that couldn’t win 10 games but Spears was easily the best player and put up huge stats. He had 37 points in a game and 10+ assists multiple times. Spears was a lethal mid-major scorer that can take over games, even dating back to his freshman campaign at Duquesne.
Originally, Spears had four teams in play. But after TCU and Arkansas got guards, it’s down to just Kansas and Florida State. Both teams could use the former Hoya, although the Jayhawks recently added Arterio Morris, a former five-star prospect and transfer from Texas. With him, Towson transfer Nick Timberlake and returning guard Dajaun Harris, that’s likely the starting backcourt for next season.
That would be good news for Florida State, who lost both Caleb Mills and Matthew Cleveland to the transfer portal. They added La Salle transfer and A-10 6th Man of the Year Josh Nickelberry but could use a lead guard to run the offense. Spears would fit that assuming he was eligible.
The problem is that the guard is a two-time transfer and could very well have to sit out. If that is the case, then Kansas would be the better option, because Coach Leonard Hamilton could only be around for one more season for the Seminoles. Spears could sit behind Harris and Timberlake before taking over the roster a year from now.
