Missouri Basketball: Analyzing incoming transfers for 2023-24 season
By Justin Wiles
New Missouri Basketball player – Caleb Grill (Iowa State)
Head Coach Dennis Gates was determined to have plenty of guard depth this upcoming season, signing a third guard out of the transfer portal. This time it was Caleb Grill, a 6’3 guard from Iowa State. Before Missouri, Grill spent three out of four years as a Cyclone and one year at UNLV. He averaged 9.5 ppg last season shooting just over 39 percent.
Grill should be a solid threat from three for the Tigers this upcoming season. Last year at Iowa State almost 79 percent of his shots were from behind the arc, taking 144 threes making just under 37 percent of them. He should have no problem matching those numbers in Missouri’s fast-paced offense. Another way Grill should help the Tigers is with his rebounding. Last season he pulled in 4 rpg, Missouri will welcome any help on they can get on the glass.
Defensively Grill is a solid off-the-ball defender. He follows the ball well and is usually in position on the back side for help defense. He also disrupts some passing lanes, last year he averaged just over 1 steal. Overall Caleb Grill should see solid minutes in the rotation as long as he stays healthy, he missed a few games last season with a back injury. And if Coach Gates can improve his three-point shooting as he has for many other players, Grill should have the best season of his collegiate career.
