Big East Basketball: 3 biggest winners and losers of 2023 offseason
By John Makuch
1. DePaul Blue Demons
After having a team filled with grad transfers and seniors, roster turnaround will be aplenty in Chicago, and it very much has been this time around.
The Blue Demons will look a lot more different than the team that took down Seton Hall in a wild ending to the first round of the Big East Tournament.
When you look at 247Sports, the Blue Demons have the 95th overall class when transfers and recruits are taken into consideration, so Tony Stubblefield will have a lot of work to do to make this team competitive next year.
They did get a few solid transfers, including Texas Tech transfer Elijah Fisher who was a borderline four-star and comes in at 6’6.
This should still be the usual gritty and tough DePaul team that we have come to get used to in the Stubblefield era, but in terms of their talent compared to the rest of the conference, they yet again come in near the bottom.
Teams do not usually perform well when you lose at least half your roster, and by bringing on what could be seven total new players, with three of them being players that signed their letter of intent, the Blue Demons may struggle early with chemistry.
While on the other hand, other teams have been able to build off solid youth, and then continue to add on with the transfer portal as those players come in out of luxury rather than necessity.
