NCAA Basketball: Analyzing top 6 teams for 5-star forward Liam McNeeley
Oklahoma Sooners
We’re down to two programs that’ll be going from the Big 12 to the SEC but since they’re both close to home, that’s not going to matter much. The Sooners have a lot of guards on the roster, as well as Pitt center transfer, John Hugley. The biggest name may be Kaden Cooper, a top-40 prospect and guard on the roster.
From a talent perspective, McNeeley could come in and be the best player on the entire roster. So that would be a large role for him as a freshman and it could get him quickly to the NBA. However, he may not be winning much as Oklahoma travels to the SEC and it’s not a 100% guarantee that head coach Porter Moser will be around if the program finishes last in the league again. That’s a quiet issue that could come into play.
Texas Longhorns
Head coach Rodney Terry is hoping to land his first-ever five-star prospect since both Ron Holland and AJ Johnson de-committed this offseason. They’re the lone “local” option from the state on this list so that could either give them a real advantage in this recruitment or McKeeley is more than comfortable moving away.
Dillon Mitchell is back for another year, along with Brock Cunningham, Dylan Disu, and Kadin Shedrick. But the last three names are guaranteed to be gone after next season, while Mitchell very likely won’t be around either as either a pro or transfer candidate. So there will be plenty of available playing time and a new-look roster that can be built around him.
There are some long-term questions about how good Coach Terry will be as the leader of Texas Basketball but right now, there’s nothing wrong with what the Longhorns have to offer.
