West Virginia Basketball: 10 candidates to replace Bob Huggins as head coach
By Joey Loose
Niko Medved
If we looked at potent mid-major programs, we could certainly find another list of names for the West Virginia opening, but we’re ending things off on a high note. If the Mountaineers want someone who has shown that he can build winning programs, then Medved might be their guy; it’s something he’s done more than once.
A native of Minnesota, Medved has worked all over the country in his coaching career. He had a long stint on Furman’s coaching staff and spent four years as their head coach, improving from 9 to 23 wins by the end of his tenure. After a solid lone season leading Drake, Medved was hired at Colorado State in 2018 and has spent the last five years solidifying a program that was stuck in neutral. He got the Rams back to the Big Dance last year before struggling a bit with a new roster this year.
Medved is one of the most attractive mid-major names that haven’t gotten their big break at the power conference level. There’s a number of directions the Mountaineers could go in, but Medved has been successful as a coach and recruiter all over the country. He’d certainly bring a bevy of experience to Morgantown and would be an attractive name both now and in the spring; he’s already proven he can win at Colorado State after all.
We’ve finished our deep dive into ten potential names for the West Virginia coaching gig, though these certainly won’t be the only ones considered or that come up in the coming days, weeks, and perhaps months. Which direction do you think this program will look to find the successor to Bob Huggins?
