Big 12 Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
16. Devon Dotson
A 6’2 guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, Dotson was a Top 20 recruit from the Class of 2018 who certainly made himself comfortable at Kansas. He played two seasons for the Jayhawks and was a major presence for the program, though his career was unfortunately shortened by the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.
Year one was already rather impressive, with Dotson averaging 12.3 points a game with decent shooting numbers, though the Jayhawks were upset in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He did have a 25-point performance late in the year against TCU, but everything came together in his sophomore season. Dotson put up 18.1 points and 4.0 assists per game, including a 31-point effort against Dayton to win the Maui Invitational. He helped lead Kansas to an impressive 28-3 season, ending the season with sixteen straight wins.
Kansas was on their way to being the #1 overall seed and potential favorite to win the national championship and Dotson was a major reason. Named a Second Team All-American, Dotson led the Big 12 in points, steals, and free throws, was among the best in assists, and field goal percentage and unsurprisingly was way up there in most efficiency rankings. His personal numbers were off the charts in his second season and he was well on his way to a great postseason before the pandemic changed history.
