Big 12 Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
14. Melvin Ejim
Born in Toronto, Ejim was a great high school player at multiple schools in the American Northeast before finding his way to Iowa State back in 2010. A 6’6 forward, he was one of the finest weapons that Fred Hoiberg had during his tenure. Ejim’s first three years came more than a decade ago, but focusing on just his senior season gives us plenty to see.
Ejim’s numbers skyrocketed as a senior, averaging 17.8 points and 8.4 assists to lead the Cyclones. He helped lead Iowa State on a 12-0 start to the season. He had an insane 48-point, 18-rebound performance against TCU in early February and added a 30-point, 16-rebound game against Kansas State a few weeks later. He helped take Iowa State to a Big 12 Tournament title and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen, scoring 19 points against North Carolina in the second round.
Ejim was named Big 12 Player of the Year for his incredible senior season and for his contributions on Iowa State’s finest season in many years. He was among the top scorers and rebounders in the Big 12 and his all-around contributions were essential to Iowa State’s success. We’re basing this ranking just on that great senior season but we’re complimenting Ejim on an impressive career in the Big 12.
