West Virginia Basketball: 4 scenarios that can come from entire Bob Huggins saga
3. Assuming that Bob Huggins doesn’t get his job back
I looked at what could happen if the coach did get his job back but what would happen if that doesn’t occur? There definitely would be hard feelings for all sides involved, especially if this ended up in the courts. It would guarantee that Huggins coached his last game at West Virginia Basketball and very likely anywhere else, at least in the power conference ranks.
The bigger impact when it comes to on-the-court is that he won’t have a say in how the next head coaching search. In fairness to new coach Eilert, we don’t know how next season goes for the Mountaineers. It could go as it did for Rodney Terry, the assistant-turned-interim coach at Texas last season when Chris Beard was fired after a domestic violence incident.
Terry took Texas to the Elite 8 and earned the official head coach title role. If the Edwards/Kriisa/Battle trio is good enough, West Virginia could do something similar, maybe he’s the guy long-term, and that saves the program another future headache. If not, then the team will have to look elsewhere.
Reportedly, Andy Kennedy (UAB) and Jerrod Calhoun (Youngstown State) were top candidates in the earlier coaching search, both of whom were under the Huggins’ coaching tree. Will this recent saga affect the program’s desire to hire one of them? That’s a possibility now, which means this situation has several head coaches involved.
