NCAA Basketball: Analyzing teams in play for WVU transfer Jose Perez
Gonzaga Bulldogs
Last season, guard play was viewed as the weakness for the Bulldogs. And without All-American star center Drew Timme around, there’s more pressure on the new-look group, led by Nolan Hickman and Creighton transfer, Ryan Nembhard. The team does have a pair of freshmen on the roster in Dusty Stromer and Jun Seok Yeo.
There’s still a trio of open spots left on the roster for Gonzaga and a guard off the bench with experience is what they need. Perez wouldn’t be able to start but he could be the 6th Man for the team and almost be guaranteed to make the NCAA Tournament next season. And compared to who else is on the list, that’s a very nice selling point this program can make to him.
Michigan Wolverines
When Perez entered the transfer portal, Michigan was viewed as the original favorite. And right now, they’re the only team to land a visit with him, set to take place at the end of the month. This is a team that has been trying to land another guard, ever since they couldn’t sign UNC transfer, Caleb Love, earlier this offseason.
Perez would likely start at the wing position, which is still open. Dug McDaniel and Alabama transfer Nimari Burnett are the projected backcourt starters but they can use another ball-handler on the roster with experience. He wouldn’t be the perfect replacement for Love but it’d be a nice late pickup for the Wolverines.
