Horizon League Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
18. Alec Brown
Brown is a 7’1 center from Winona, Minnesota who came to Green Bay back in 2010. He developed into a major role in Brian Wardle’s program, starting all but one of the 126 games he played for the Phoenix. Due to the nature of this article, we won’t be focusing on his first three seasons, but it’s important to know that he was a talented scorer and rebounder throughout his career.
Year four was impressive enough to stand alone, as Brown averaged 15.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game. He had a triple-double against Minnesota-Duluth, including 10 blocks, early in the season and would add a 40-point effort against Fairfield a few weeks later. He was even more dynamic in conference play, leading the Phoenix to the Horizon League regular season title before settling on a trip to the NIT.
Brown was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year and earned First Team All-Horizon honors as well; not the first time we received that nod in his career. He was the conference’s top shot blocker as a senior and had impressive scoring and rebounding numbers as well. Brown had impressive size and used it well in becoming one of the best frontcourt weapons in this conference in the early part of the 2010’s.
