Ivy League Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
23. Sean McGonagill
A 6’1 point guard from Brookfield, Illinois, McGonagill left the suburbs of Chicago for Rhode Island, spending his collegiate career starring at Brown. He was a great scoring threat and leader in the backcourt from the beginning of his time with the Bears, joining the program way back in 2010. As a result of this series, we’re only focusing on his senior season but he ended his career on a high note.
In that final collegiate campaign, McGonagill averaged 17.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists, helping to lead the Bears above .500 for the first time in several years. Among his highlights was a 12-assist performance against Daniel Webster, a non-D1 opponent, and a 29-point outing against Yale just a few weeks later. He’d also lead Brown into the CIT, though they’d drop their first game to Holy Cross.
McGonagill would earn First Team All-Ivy honors for that senior season. He was one of the leaders in assists in each of his seasons and had developed into the second-best scorer and third-best in steals in the Ivy League. Though he put up more than 1600 points in his career, it can be easy to forget someone like McGonagall because of how the Bears struggled, but he was a really solid piece in this backcourt.
