MAC Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
4. Marcus Keene
A 5’11 point guard from San Antonio, Keene spent just one year playing basketball in the MAC, but it was a pretty special season. He was actually at Youngstown State for the first two years of his career but decided to transfer back in 2015. Eventually deciding on Central Michigan, Keene would play a monster role for the Chippewas in his junior year.
These numbers are no mistake: Keene averaged 30.0 points and 4.9 assists per game for Central Michigan that year. It was a mediocre season for the Chippewas but Keene certainly added to the intrigue. He had a 50-point effort against Miami-Ohio and six other 40-point games, including 41 in their season-ending loss in the MAC Tournament.
Only one other player has averaged 30 points a game in a season since the turn of the century, making Keene’s offensive explosion pretty special. He clearly was the national leader in scoring and earned First Team All-MAC honors, standing out as perhaps the best offensive weapon that conference has ever seen. Keene’s sheer numbers were off the charts. It’s just unfortunately that his school scuffled at times and couldn’t get him into the postseason.
