Primo Spears – 6’3 Guard – Florida State Seminoles

Primo Spears joins the Florida State Seminoles in the ACC after driving positive returns in the Big East with Georgetown Hoyas. The departure of Patrick Ewing at the helm certainly had a lot to do with his jump to the transfer portal and in the end, he lands with veteran head coach Leonard Hamilton to close out his NCAA career.

Granted, it’s Spears’ third stop in over three seasons, but given the current climate that NIL, Covid, and the Transfer Portal have built, it certainly says a lot when a player moves up slightly from one power conference to another.

He finished fourth in the Big East this past season with 169 assists to go along with 16.0 ppg, where he also finished fourth among scoring leaders. He also managed to shoot the ball 40.8 percent from the floor and 30 percent from behind the arc. He shot the ball sparingly from deep, just shooting 27-of-90, however, it’s worth noting, he’s capable of shooting the ball on the perimeter given the style in which the Seminoles play.

He dished out a career-high 11 assists to go along with a career-high 37 points on 15-of-31 shooting from the field back on Jan. 21, 2023 against the Xavier Musketeers. He certainly knows how to turn things up when conference play arrives.

Spears has an opportunity to take over the Seminoles’ floor general spot given his prowess to score the ball just as well as his ability to get others involved in the offense. He dished out a career-high number of assists as he continues to improve in his role as a playmaker just as much as he’s a scorer. Ironically, the Seminoles have struggled at the point guard spot since acquiring Caleb Mills roughly two seasons ago.

Things weren’t always on the up-and-up for Spears while a member of the Hoyas, but he’ll certainly have the potential to produce greater results as a member of the Seminoles given their track record with transfer guards from other highly-rated places.
