NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing top 10 teams for 5-star VJ Edgecombe
St. John’s Red Storm
The Red Storm have landed a number of big names this offseason, including several shooting guards. Guys like Jordan Dingle, Naheim Alleyne, and Sean Conway are all in their last years, creating a potential pathway for the local prospect. One thing to consider is that they already have Simeon Wilcher, a top-40 incoming freshman who’ll be around for at least a couple of years.
The ideal scenario for new coach Rick Pitino in the 2024 class is to get the two New York stars, Edgecombe and five-star point guard, Boogie Fland, committed. That would set the backcourt up very nicely to replace all of the seniors and have them remain nationally competitive in the 2024-25 campaign.
UConn Huskies
It’s been a past good month for the Huskies, landing a pair of top-100 commits in the 2024 class. They got wing Isaiah Abraham and point guard Ahmad Nowell so naturally, a shooting guard should be next. They’ll need a replacement for incoming grad transfer Cam Spencer, along with potentially five-star freshman guard Stephon Castle if he becomes a one-and-done.
After winning the 2023 national title, all of the recruiting momentum is on Coach Dan Hurley and UConn’s side. They’re after multiple other backcourt guards so they don’t have to put all of their eggs in Edgecombe. But if St. John’s doesn’t become a favorite shortly, the Huskies may make a push to try to get commitment No. 3.
