MEAC Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
22. Amere May
A 6’3 guard from Covert, Michigan, May began his college basketball journey at Delaware State in 2011. After two seasons, mostly as a bench piece, May transferred to Saint Augustine’s in North Carolina for his junior year but actually came back to the Hornets’ program as a senior in 2014. That senior year was enough to warrant inclusion today.
Delaware State and new head coach Keith Walker were glad to have May back on campus and he rewarded them. He averaged 21.0 points per game and was one of the nation’s most explosive scorers. His first big performance was a 32-point outing in a road win at Wake Forest. A few weeks later he put up 48 points against St. Francis (NY). After logging many minutes and scoring a ton of points, he’d lead the Hornets to the MEAC title game before falling just short again Hampton.
In that season back in Delaware, May was the league’s top scorer, while his 39% mark from outside the arc also lead the conference. Unsurprisingly, he was given First Team All-MEAC honors, and ranked 7th in the nation in points per game that season. His sheer scoring outbursts kept the Hornets in some of these games and that final burst at the end of the year almost led the Hornets to the Big Dance.
