Texas A&M Basketball: 3 reasons the Aggies can win the SEC in 2023-24
They should be improved in defending the perimeter as well
The final reason I think the Aggies can win the league title goes hand-in-hand with the previous one, their perimeter defense should also be improved. The roster last season didn’t have much length outside of Marble and Coleman III, and the Aggies had even less so when it came to the backcourt, with guards ranging from 6’0-6’4. The addition of 6’5 guards Jace Carter and Eli Lawrence will help a perimeter defense that struggled to defend the three-point shot.
Even though the numbers look good enough with the Aggies holding opponents to 33% shooting, they ranked near the bottom in the country in the number of field goal attempts that are three-pointers and 37.4% of their opponents’ points came off of three-point baskets which was the 19th-highest percentage in the nation last season. A lot of that had to do with the lack of height in their guard rotation and those problems reared their ugly heads on the biggest stage for the Aggies in their loss to Penn State, where the Nittany Lions shot 59% from deep knocking down 13 triples.
Carter and Lawrence and their length added to the rotation should help in defending the long ball and make it more difficult for their opponents to get those shots off. It’s for these reasons I think Texas A&M has a legitimate chance to win the SEC.
