NCAA Basketball: Ranking the 8 teams in 2023 Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament
5. Texas Tech Red Raiders
2022-23 season record: 16-16 (5-13 Big 12)
Everything changed for the Red Raiders in the last month of last season, as head coach Mark Adams had to go due to a crumbling locker room culture. Several players left for the portal, including Fardaws Aimaq and Jaylon Tyson, while both Kevin Obanor and De’Vion Harmon graduated.
New head coach Grant McCasland had a late start to the roster-building after coming over from North Texas. In the frontcourt, he was able to get a pair of former Arizona State players in 7’0 center Warren Washington, as well as wing Devan Cambridge. Plus, former Nevada forward and Mountain West Rookie of the Year Darrion Williams is a national breakout star to watch.
To pair with returning starting freshman Pop Isaacs, Texas Tech added Joe Toussaint, a late transfer pickup from West Virginia. And former Grand Canyon guard Chance McMillian adds to the backcourt depth. If any of the returning role players (Lamar Washington, D’maurian Williams, and Kerwin Walton) can have a larger impact, the Big 12 team could outperform preseason expectations.
There’s a lot to like about the Red Raiders but there’s a lot that’s unproven, including how the slow-paced style that McCasland employed at North Texas will work with this new cast of characters. The matchup with Villanova will be very telling for the potential of this roster.
