4. Memphis Tigers

2022-23 season record: 26-9 (13-5 AAC)

Even though we’re now in August, the roster for Memphis is still in flux. What we do know is that 5 of the top 6 scorers are gone, including former AAC Player of the Year and star guard, Kendric Davis. The other key piece on last season’s team was Deandre Williams, who averaged 17.7 ppg and 8.2 rpg. He’s reportedly looking to get an extra year of eligibility and if that happens, this is a top-20 caliber NCAA Basketball.

Even without Williams, the Tigers still have plenty of talent, thanks to Coach Penny Hardaways’ work in the transfer portal. He added Caleb Mills and Jahvon Quinerly to be the projected starters, while Jaykwon Walton comes over from Wichita State and is one of the better shooters in the country. David Jones also joins after producing 13.2 ppg and 6.8 rpg at St. John’s.

On paper, the biggest addition for Memphis is Jordan Brown, a 6’11 big man and Sun Belt Player of the Year last season. At Louisiana, the big man produced 19.3 ppg and 8.6 rpg and will be the projected starting center on the roster. D-II transfer Jonathan Pierre and former Temple forward Nick Jordain adds depth whether Williams is in the fold or now.

This doesn’t even include Mikey Williams, the five-star freshman guard currently away from the team while he deals with reported legal issues. If everyone is available, this is arguably the most talented roster from top to bottom in the Hardaway era. But will all the new pieces come together by November?
