Darrion Williams – 6’6 Forward – Texas Tech Red Raiders

Darrion Williams looks to make his presence felt in the Big 12 with the Texas Tech Red Raiders after a strong freshman performance with the Nevada Wolfpack in the Mountain West Conference this past season. While he’s undersized at the forward spot a 6-foot-6, he makes up for it with his athleticism and strong frame that he utilizes to battle on the boards and in the paint.

Williams had an impressive debut in the college basketball ranks this past season to take home MWC Rookie of the Year honors when it was all said and done. He finished with 7.6 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 2.7 apg and 1.4 spg on 35.7 percent shooting from 3-point range and 41.4 percent shooting from the field.

He took the conference by storm in his first season, finishing fourth in the MWC in total rebounds (240), seventh in steals (47) and 17th in assists (90). The emerging wing-forward recorded 10 games with at least 10 rebounds or more and recorded a double-double in his debut season as he looks to make even more of a splash in the Big 12 ranks.

Williams nearly finished with a triple-double in his best outing of the season, finishing with a career-high 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and a steal on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor and 2-of-2 shooting from deep in a 77-66 victory against Fresno State back on Feb. 10. His career high in rebounds is at 13, a total he recorded in a 97-94 victory over New Mexico back on Jan. 23.

He’ll look to replace the contributions of Kevin Obanor, who put up 14.4 ppg and 6.4 rpg this past season before signing with the Toronto Raptors on an Exhibit-10 deal. Williams has shown he can operate at a number of positions with his ability to get downhill and make things happen around the rim and on the perimeter. The Red Raiders will look to Williams and five others out of the transfer portal to turn things around for them after a ninth-place finish in the Big 12 in 2022-23.
