Pac-12 Basketball: Each team’s best acquisition out of 2023 transfer portal
Isaac Jones – 6’9 Center/Forward – Washington State Cougars
Isaac Jones is a name the Washington State Cougars hope can make his mark in the Pac-12 as an addition out of the transfer portal. He’s made quite the ascent already in the Division I ranks since making his debut as a “senior” in 2022-23 with the Idaho Vandals in the Big Sky.
He’s a wiry 6-foot-9 forward that’s shown flashes of his exploits as a two-way forward presence that flies around the floor to make an impact above the rim. He produced 19.4 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 1.7 apg and 1.1 bpg across 31 games, all starts, on 62.9 percent shooting from the field with Idaho in 2022-23.
Jones generated an offensive rating of 125.3, ranking him second in the Big Sky this past season while generating a PER of 30.7, good for first in the conference. He led the conference in blocks (35), finished second in field goals made (227), fifth in rebounds (243), fifth in defensive rebounds (180) and fifth in offensive rebounds (63).
He spent 2019-22 at Wenatchee Valley College in Washington before making his mark in the Big Sky this past season. In his lone season on the Division I stage, he earned second-team All-Big Sky honors. It will be interesting to see how he develops as a graduate transfer in the Cougars’ frontcourt.
Jones is a player that’s just scratching the surface of what he can do at the center/forward spot. He’s got tremendous hands around the painted area that allow him to clean up the glass and catch post-ups with ease. He’s an emerging two-way presence that should replace the loss of D.J. Rodman in a big way given his upside around the rim.
He went off for 42 points, 12 rebounds and four assists on 19-of-26 shooting from the floor in an overtime loss to Sacramento State back on Jan. 5. His ability to be a relentless attacker and protector around the rim should turn heads in the Pac-12 and then some this season.
