SoCon Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
7. Karl Cochran
Cochran is a 6’1 guard from Marietta, Georgia who was an impactful part of Mike Young’s Wofford program earlier in the decade. He joined the Terriers in 2011 and put up solid numbers throughout his four years in the SoCon, already averaging more than 15 points a game as a sophomore. For this article, of course, we’ll only consider those final two seasons, but they were pretty special.
During his junior season, Cochran averaged 15.7 points per game and helped lead the Terriers to the NCAA Tournament, scoring 23 points against Western Carolina in the SoCon Tournament final. Wofford would win all eleven games in his career where Cochran scored at least 25, including a career-high 33-point performance against Chattanooga. Not only did he put up similar numbers as a senior, but he led the Terriers back to the Big Dance, with 28 wins and both the regular season and tournament crowns.
Cochran was named First Team All-SoCon in each of those final seasons, also claiming Tournament MVP as a junior and SoCon Player of the Year as a senior. He was an efficient scorer, a great defensive rebounder, and was one of the conference’s leaders in steals in those last few years. Cochran frankly did it all and was a major part of two straight Tournament teams while with the Terriers, claiming his own bit of hardware as well.
