Virginia Basketball: Projected starting lineup and depth chart for 2023-24 season
Power Forward
Starter – Jacob Groves (20 mpg)
Jacob Groves joins the UVA Cavaliers after spending the past two seasons in the Big 12 with the Oklahoma Sooners. He’s been quite the journeyman in the college basketball scene as the Cavaliers will be his third school as he wraps up his career.
He put up arguably his best season shooting the ball at the stretch-forward spot this past season with the Sooners, finishing with 6.8 ppg and 2.5 rpg on 38.1 percent shooting from behind the arc. He knocked down 1.2 3-pointers per contest in 2022-23. He’ll look to play a role in the Cavaliers frontcourt with his shooting prowess and rebounding ability at 6-foot-7.
Bench – Ryan Dunn (10 mpg), Black Buchanan (10 mpg)
Ryan Dunn emerges as a potential piece in the frontcourt with his versatility at 6-foot-8. He’s shown he’s capable of blocking shots and holding his own in the painted area. As he improves his presence around the painted area as a rebounder and shot blocker, look for him to potentially emerge in the power forward role.
Black Buchanan is a new face for the Cavaliers that should emerge in the frontcourt as well. He’s a freshman out of Lake City High in Idaho. He led his squad to a 26-0 record and a 5A State Title on 15.2 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.9 bpg and 1.9 spg in his final high school season. He’ll have opportunities to prove himself in a thin frontcourt in 2023-24.
