NCAA Basketball: 5 recent hires that has had Deion Sanders-level hype
Juwan Howard – Michigan Wolverines
Another player alum who came back to his school is Juwan Howard, a member of the famous/infamous “Fab 5” team back in the 1990s. Those Wolverines were one of the most notable NCAA Basketball programs in the past few decades so his coming from the NBA as an assistant to replace John Beilein when he left for the Cleveland Cavaliers received plenty of hype and fan fare.
Instantly, prospects wanted to go to Michigan. Several five-stars have committed in the past four years, including Caleb Houstan and Moussa Diabate. They were on one of the two Sweet 16 teams that Howard has coached so far, including winning Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2021 after leading the team to a 23-5 record overall.
It hasn’t been all roses for Coach Howard. Last year went poorly for the program, despite having an All-American player on the roster in Hunter Dickinson. They also had Jett Howard and Kobe Bufin, who both ended up getting picked in the top 15 of the most recent NBA Draft. The roster they have coming up isn’t projected to make the NCAA Tournament but he’s capable of pulling off another surprise.
Even still, plenty of top-tier prospects in future classes are set to visit the Wolverines and Coach Howard is still a popular name on the recruiting trail. He’ll need a bounce-back year to get back the previous momentum though.
