NCAA Basketball: Top 25 breakout sophomores to watch for 2023-24 season
13. Rodney Rice – Virginia Tech Hokies
2022-23 season stats: 7.4 ppg and 3.3 rpg
Injuries limited Rice to just eight games total last season yet the former top-60 prospect looked impressive when he was on the court. He had 11 points off the bench against Duke and went for 17 against NC State in just 19 minutes. With Darius Maddox having transferred out, Rice will be the starting wing and part of a potentially great offensive trio in the backcourt.
12. Ven-Allen Lubin – Vanderbilt Commodores
2022-23 season stats: 6.2 ppg and 4.4 rpg
On a team filled with veterans at Notre Dame, Lubin was the youngster who managed to carve out a sizeable role. The 6’8 forward went for eight double-digit scoring games, including 19 points and eight rebounds versus Wake Forest late in the year. He’s now at Vanderbilt, who replaced both Liam Robbins and Myles Stute in the frontcourt. The Commodores will need a breakout effort from Lubin to have a shot in the SEC.
11. Desmond Claude – Xavier Musketeers
2022-23 season stats: 4.7 ppg and 1.8 apg
The 6’5 guard was on the All-Big East team last season, shooting 42% from the field and 29% from deep. Claude came on in the ladder half of the season, with five double-digit scoring outputs that included 12 points versus Providence. He has a chance for a large role at Xavier, between the departures of Colby Jones and Adam Kunkel and the reported injuries to both Jerome Hunter and Zach Freemantle. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Claude start to open the season.
