NCAA Basketball: Top 25 breakout sophomores to watch for 2023-24 season
4. Dillon Mitchell – Texas Longhorns
2022-23 season stats: 4.3 ppg and 3.9 rpg
Mitchell is a former five-star prospect who started all 38 games for Texas. But due to having plenty of veteran scoring options in front of him, the 6’8 forward was the 5th option at times on the court. He was still very efficient, shooting 64% from the field, though he didn’t take any shots from deep. Mitchell did have a season-high of 16 points in a non-con matchup against Texas A&M-Commerce.
There was a lot going on at Texas last season but with Coach Rodney Terry the full-time HC, that stability will hurt Mitchell’s development. We’ll see how much usage Oral Roberts transfer Max Abmas takes but there’s a spot for Mitchell to have a much sizeable role on offense this time around.
3. Rylan Griffen – Alabama Crimson Tide
2022-23 season stats: 5.9 ppg and 2.6 rpg
When you’re playing behind the best freshman in NCAA Basketball last season (Brandon Miller), it’s always going to be hard to get a huge role. Yet Griffen did play 16 mpg off the bench, shooting 37% from the field and 31% from deep. He had 30 points combined against Liberty and Longwood to start the season and had five other double-digit scoring outputs that year, including 16 against Auburn.
Without Miller and with top-100 freshman wing Mouhamed Dioubate reportedly injured, Griffen has the wing position all to himself. And with unknowns throughout the roster besides Mark Sears, look for the sophomore wing to have a large role on the offense.
