NCAA Basketball: Preseason top 25 power rankings for 2023-24 season
3. Kansas Jayhawks
2022-23 season record: 28-8 (13-5 Big 12)
Last season would’ve been the best year in program history for about 75% of D-I NCAA Basketball programs. And yet for Kansas in the Coach Bill Self era, it was okay. They were a 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament but lost to Arkansas in the Round of 32 without the HC. As expected, there were several key losses, including star forward, Big 12 Player of the Year Jalen Wilson, and the NBA Draft lottery pick, Gradey Dick.
Three starters are back for Kansas, led by point guard and Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Dajuan Harris Jr. Wing Kevin McCullar and forward KJ Adams will have them as one of the better defensive units in the sport, though there are some concerns when it comes to shooting.
To alleviate that are two of the top transfers that were in the portal this offseason. Hunter Dickinson was an All-American star center at Michigan for the past couple of years, coming off averaging 18.5 ppg and 9.0 rpg. And Towson grad transfer Nicolas Timberlake (17.7 ppg on 42% 3PT) is one of the best pure shooters in the country. These two makes for easily one of the top starting lineups for next season.
With Texas transfer guard Arterio Morris currently suspended and other offseason departures limiting how much depth they have; an injury could really shape things up. But since most teams use 7-8 man rotations anyways, the Jayhawks should once again be in great shape entering this year.
