Purdue Basketball: 2023-24 season preview for the Boilermakers
Overall outlook and expectations for Purdue
Head coach Matt Painter probably has one of the more comfortable jobs coaching his roster given the lack of turnover in the transfer portal. With just one transfer portal addition and two losses to deal with, there are a lot of potential positives that should come from the year for Purdue.
All things should run through Zach Edey once again for the Boilermakers. Having a 7-foot-4 presence in the paint still carries weight in the college basketball landscape and for Purdue, it holds a lot of weight, so long as he stays healthy.
Things should improve for Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer as they bring their experiences from last season back to the fold. It’s not easy playing right away on the national stage but both of them have handled themselves well as they look to return for their sophomore seasons. They aren’t the only sophomores to keep an eye on either. Forward Trey Kaufman-Renn is another sophomore who’s in for a productive year.
Given the roster doesn’t have much turnover and is heavy on the forward position, expectations should be high for this squad to be very good in 2023-24. Winning the Maui Invitational could go a long way in projecting where Purdue’s season is headed in November. They’ve got a few favorable matchups looming if they can get through Gonzaga in the opening round.
Look for this team to compete once again for a Big Ten title and potentially earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament once again with a new season on the horizon.
