St. John’s Basketball: 2023-24 season preview for the Red Storm
By Caleb Hall
St. Johns Key Reserves:
Sophomore Guard, Rj Luis
RJ Luis is an incoming transfer from UMASS in which he averaged 11.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 45.5% from the floor and shooting 34.8% from three. Luis will look to be an athletic cutter for St. John’s off the bench this season. Luis could even make his way into the starting for a few games and it shouldn’t be surprising. His 6’7 height is also something to note, he could get play at the shooting guard, small forward, or power forward position. His defense and 3 point shooting are passable but not something to write home about, but Luis should be an important player for the Red Storm next season.
Sophomore Forward, Zuby Ejiofor
Zuby Ejiofor transfers from out of Kansas last season where he had not very much playing time. He looks to backup the center position and will bring some more defense and rebounding to the position to contrast to Soriano’s more offensive approach.
Sophomore Guard, Cruz Davis
Cruz Davis follows Pitino from Iona to St. Johns were he averaged 6.5 points while shooting nearly 42% last season. He looks to backup the guard position and will fill the need whenever Dingle or Jenkins isn’t in the game. Of, course playing in the MAAC is much different than the competitive Big East, Cruz should be able to manage the game and make some shots next season.
Freshman Guard, Simeon Wilcher
Simeon Wilcher is one of the true freshman recruits Pitino brought in this offseason. Wilcher was a 4-star top 50 player in the 2023 class (per 247sports) and although he may not get much playing time this year, he should look to helm the point guard position next year if Pitino brings no one else in.
Sophomore Forward, Sadiku Ayo
Sadiku Ayo was another player that followed Pitino from Iona to St. John’s. Ayo did not average a lot for the Gaels last season, but as a freshman he didn’t get a whole lot of playing time. Pitino must see something special in him if he brought him along and he will get some playing time although it may not be very much.
Guard/Forward, Chris Ledlum
Chris Ledlum spent the last 3 seasons with Harvard, where last season he averaged 18.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, while shooting 47.3% on field goals and 29.4% from three. Ledlum has an impressive game that mostly consists of cutting to the basket and playing scrappy defense. Ledlum could potentially start for the Red Storm but his late July edition makes me think Pitino will hold off at least for the start of the season
