Texas Tech Basketball: Projected depth chart and rotation for 2023-24 season
Small forward
Projected starter: Devan Cambridge (28 mpg)
Cambridge is a 4-year player who has been at both Auburn and Arizona State, coming off a career-high 9.8 ppg and 5.4 rpg in 27 mpg. The 6’6 wing had 16 games of double-digit scoring, including 18 points against Washington and 10 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks versus Stanford off the bench.
Cambridge made only 28 total three-pointers last season and is more known to operate inside the three-point line. He’s also a solid enough help-side defender where I could see Texas Tech playing him at the four-spot at times. But the lack of proven depth on the wings makes it a more natural fit to have him at the three and give the team some good defensive lineups that have some size to it.
Projected reserves: Lamar Washington (12 mpg), Kerwin Walton
The other key freshman that returned for Texas Tech Basketball was Washington, a 6’4 guard who averaged 3.4 ppg in 15 mpg, including three starts. His big outing was 12 points, seven rebounds, and five assists against Nicolls State, along with 13 points and five steals against Kansas State. Look for him to get a larger role at some point this season, even ahead of some of the veterans.
One of those veterans is Walton, who was thought to be a key transfer pickup a year ago for the Red Raiders. Instead, he only produced 3.6 ppg in 13 mpg, though he did shoot 41% from deep. The 6’5 wing’s shooting ability alone should get him some minutes but with Cambridge on board, it’s going to be a battle to get into the rotation this year.
