NCAA Basketball: Ranking of top 100 returning players for 2023-24 season
10. LJ Cryer – Houston Cougars
2022-23 season stats: 15.0 ppg and 2.1 apg
Cryer was one of the top pure scorers while at Baylor, coming off shooting 45% from the field and 42% from deep, along with nearly 90% from the free throw line. The 6’1 guard went for 28 points against UCLA, along with a career-high 30 points in the NCAA Tournament against Creighton. He’s essentially the replacement for Marcus Sasser at Houston and should be a frontrunner for Big 12 Player of the Year on a top-10 roster.
9. Donovan Clingan – UConn Huskies
2022-23 season stats: 6.9 ppg and 5.6 rpg
Despite averaging just 13 mpg off the bench, Clingan was easily a top-tier impact freshman last season. The 7’2 center shot 66% from the field and still managed nearly two blocks a game, along with having a 20-point, 10-rebound, and 5-block game against Marquette. With Adama Sanogo gone, Clingan is going to put up some major stats and make a case for All-American this season.
8. Justin Moore – Villanova Wildcats
2022-23 season stats: 13.5 ppg and 3.2 apg
The 6’4 guard was limited to just 13 games last season after recovering from a serious lower-leg injury and the Wildcats became a threat as soon as he was back. He had a vintage 25-point game against Xavier in 35 minutes. With a fully healthy offseason and a better supporting cast, look for Villanova to be a contender in the Big East, with Moore being the face of the squad.
7. DaRon Holmes – Dayton Flyers
2022-23 season stats: 18.4 ppg and 8.1 rpg
The former top-50 prospect had his expected breakout campaign as a sophomore, becoming the top big man in the A-10 and runner-up to Ace Baldwin for both main awards. Holmes had a 32-point effort on the road at Fordham, followed up with 34 points and six rebounds against George Mason. With him back, Dayton should be the favorites to win the league and the big man could get an All-American mention if things go well.
6. Hunter Dickinson – Kansas Jayhawks
2022-23 season stats: 18.5 ppg and 9.0 rpg
The 3-time All-Big Ten star is arguably the best post-scorer in NCAA Basketball, shooting 56% from the field and 42% from deep. Dickinson had a 32-point and 12-rebound game against Maryland and went for 31 points and 16 rebounds against Illinois. Now at Kansas, the senior big man has a chance to put up some big stats on a top-5 team, automatically putting Dickinson in the NPOY race.
