2. Texas Longhorns

Last season: 29-9, 12-6 in the Big 12

The Longhorns return in 2023-24 looking to do a whole lot more damage in Rodney Terry’s second season on the sidelines. Terry led the Longhorns to a 22-8 record following the dismissal of Chris Beard including an appearance in the Elite Eight as a No. 2 seed in the Midwest region.

Tyrese Hunter is back as is Dylan Disu, Brock Cunningham and Dillon Mitchell but it’s the transfer portal additions that should push them over the hump this upcoming season. Max Abmas (Oral Roberts) will look to fill the void left by the departure of Marcus Carr. Abmas is a two-time Summit Player of the Year and comes off leading Oral Roberts to its best season in school history and an NCAA Tournament appearance. He’ll look to lead the backcourt in a variety of ways with his skill set.

Kadin Shedrick (UVA) should increase their presence in the painted area with his ability to operate on both ends. Itihiel Horton should give them some versatility on the wing after averaging 12.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.6 apg and 1.4 spg on 34.8 percent shooting from behind the arc with UCF, formerly of the AAC, in 2022-23. Chendell Weaver (UT-Arlington) and Ze’Rik Onyema (UTEP) should provide some depth off the bench as well.

Look for Texas to compete once again for a Big 12 crown at the top of the pack with an experienced cast of old and new.
