SEC Basketball: Ranking all 14 head coaches heading into 2023-24 season
By Caleb Hall
No. 10 Todd Golden, Florida Gators
Todd Golden took over the Florida Gators last year after Mike White’s departure and he looks to put an end to the mediocrity that has been Florida basketball lately. Golden Started his career as a college basketball player where he played guard for Saint Mary’s for four years and then played overseas basketball for the next 2 years.
Golden was then an assistant at couple other schools including Columbia, Auburn, and San Francisco. He took over San Francisco from 2019-2022 where he had a 57-36 overall record. In his final year there he went 24-10 and made the NCAA Tournament where they ultimately lost in overtime to the 7 seeded Murray State Racers 92-87.
Golden’s first year at Florida ended with a 16-17 (9-9) record while missing the NCAA Tournament. Golden should look to get the Gators back on track next year and his experience at San Francisco should prove he is able to do that. With Mike White Florida was consistently underperforming and Golden doesn’t want to fall into that trap, and I’m not sure he will. He is the youngest coach in the SEC and has the want to prove himself to their coaches.
It’s not as if Florida was bad either, they weren’t necessarily good, but they did have stretches of playing really good basketball. They had beat a top 20 Missouri team by 9 and the #2 ranked Tennessee Vols (at the time) by 13.
Golden should be getting the Gators back on track, and that is proven by the 6-player transfer class he will bring in next year. Golden and the Gators should be a team to watch in the future, especially is Golden fulfills his potential.
