NCAA Basketball: Ranking top 20 Bob Cousy Award players for 2023-24 season
9. Jamal Shead – Houston Cougars
2022-23 season stats: 10.5 ppg and 5.4 apg
Not only is Shead one of the top passers in the country but he’s also the reigning AAC Defensive Player of the Year. He’s now in the Big 12, which presents both a challenge and an opportunity. He has a couple of new guards around him but it’s Shead’s team this time around and a larger scorer role should come from it.
8. Max Abmas – Texas Longhorns
2022-23 season stats (at Oral Roberts): 21.9 ppg and 4.0 apg
One of the best pure scorers in the sport recently, Abmas, a former two-time Summit League Player of the Year, is now in the Big 12. He replaces Marcus Carr in the backcourt and if he scores around 20 ppg, he’ll be a National POY candidate. The only question is how much of his scoring ability translates up a level.
7. Isaiah Collier – USC Trojans
2022-23 season stats: N/A
Collier is the No. 1 incoming freshman from the 2023 class and a projected top NBA Draft pick. He’s expected to take a leading role in the USC offense, right next to returning leading scorer, Boogie Ellis. Depending on how they share the scoring duties, both players could be contenders for their respective awards on the perimeter.
