Head coach Buzz Williams didn’t push the easy button with the Aggies non-conference schedule this season. After their season opener against Texas A&M-Commerce, they’ll have back-to-back road games at Ohio State and then SMU before hosting Oral Roberts on Nov. 17. The odds though, are in the Aggies’ favor.
The Aggies hold two victories over the Buckeyes already at 2-0 in their series history, though their last meeting came on November 23, 2007. As for SMU, the Aggies have won three of the last four meetings including last year’s meeting 83-64. Texas A&M has won seven of their last eight meetings against Oral Roberts.
Following that trio of games, Texas A&M will travel to Florida for the ESPN Events Invitational where they’ll face off against Penn State. It will be a rematch of their NCAA Tournament meeting that saw the Nittany Lions upend the Aggies 76-59. Depending on the result, they’ll face FAU/Butler the following day and an opponent from the other side of the bracket when things conclude on Sunday.
After the ESPN Events Invitational, the Aggies will remain on the road, heading to Charlottesville to face the Virginia Cavaliers. It will be the team’s first meeting since the 1962-63 season as they square off in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge.
Texas A&M will host DePaul and then Memphis over the next two games at Reed Arena before a neutral-site game against Houston at the Toyota Center. All eyes will be on both squads in that one with the potential for a Top 25 matchup. Things cool off for the Aggies on the non-conference slate to close things out as they’ll face Houston Christian and Prairie View A&M to close out the schedule.
The SEC is one of the best conferences in college basketball. The Aggies proved they could hold their own after going 15-3 in the conference standings. They’ll be tougher competition but they’ve got a stronger frontcourt presence that should anchor them right back into the Top 5 mix this upcoming season.
