NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Pros and cons of 5-star Dylan Harper’s top 5 teams
Kansas Jayhawks
Pros
The Jayhawks have a clear need for a scoring guard in the 2024 class to replace Kevin McCullar, who is having a big year in his final season of eligibility. Senior guard Nicolas Timberlake has to go as well, creating an opportunity for Harper to come in and have a huge role out the gate in the offense.
What makes Kansas an intriguing option is that they’re likely bringing back starting point guard, Dajuan Harris Jr. But the difference between this and other options is that Harper can focus on scoring, while Harris is only a passer who doesn’t shoot. It could be the ideal scenario for the five-star guard, playing for a perennial national title contender and a hall of fame HC in Bill Self.
Cons
Even though Kansas is losing a couple of guards, they’re still keeping Elmarko Jackson on the roster, along with adding top-30 commit, Labaron Philon. On paper, Harper is still better but like with Auburn, may be more off-the-ball than he’d like as someone who wants to show what he can do as a playmaker.
There’s also the matter of Hunter Dickinson, the star big man for the Jayhawks. It’s a double-edged sword situation if you’re Harper because with him, you’re on a preseason top-5 team with title aspirations. However, you’d have less of a role overall. Without him, you’d have the ball more but on a team not as good.
