SWAC Basketball: Tidjiane Dioumassi's journey from Paris, France to the Bluff of Southern University.
CW: Can you talk about a game this season that stood out for you?
TD: I’ll say when we played Jackson State at their place. The connectivity we had as a team was unmatched, we stayed together through the ups and downs. We were happy just sharing the court together. Yeah, we still have a lot to work on, we haven't even scratched the surface yet. If we are all willing to lose ourselves in the fight and stay connected no matter what, no one can stop us but us.
CW: Please describe your game. You had a 12 assist game against Alabama State. How does it feel to have a game like that? Have you stepped into a leadership role?
TD: To be honest, I can’t really take any credit for that, my coaches and teammates are making the game really easy for me out there. They all work super hard, I haven't seen a team where it’s always someone putting up extra shots, watching film or lifting weights. Of course having 12 assists looks nice but I should thank them for that. Coach KJ is teaching me every in and out of our offense. I can call on any assistant or manager whenever I want to get better. My teammates are cutting at the right time, and when they're open I know it’s going in. So I really just have to take what the game gives me.
CW: How hard has it been being away from home?
TD: I don’t really like to think about it that way. Obviously, sometimes I miss home. I miss my mom and my siblings all the time but I made a choice to reach my goals. And if that’s what it takes I’m okay with it 100%. Also, Jag Nation has helped me throughout this process, they welcomed me with open arms. They have treated me like family since I got here. Southern is like a second home to me. I love it here, love the people, the school and can’t forget about the food (laughs).
CW: What are your future goals in basketball?
TD: My first goal is to play in the NBA, then when I make it I have other objectives to reach in the league. But at the end of the day, I want to master the game of basketball. Get better everyday and be the best player I can be. I have so much love for this game, I’m willing to give my life to it and see where it takes me.
So far Dioumassi has been on a journey, from one country to another. I am excited to see what the future holds for him. Seeing him develop this season has really been a treat to watch.
