Must-Read: Fantastic Story on New Monmouth Head Coach King Rice

facebooktwitterreddit

Normally we don’t write a post on the site just for the sake of featuring another article on another site. However, this one is too good to pass up.

King Rice was named the head coach at Monmouth back in March, his first head coaching gig after being an assistant coach at various schools since 1992.

Rice is probably known more for his playing career at North Carolina than his coaching career to this point. But Rice was a huge part of the ascent of the Vanderbilt basketball program under Kevin Stallings.

He helped recruit the foundation of the team as it stands right now, which has led to Vandy’s pre-season Top 10 ranking. And his recruiting skills will ultimately be what helps him succeed at a program like Monmouth.

But that’s not what this story is about. It’s about a man on the road to redemption.

Dave D’Alessandro of The Star-Ledger wrote an outstanding story yesterday on Rice’s battle with alcoholism and the path that he’s been on to get to this particular point in his life.

It’s one fine piece of journalism, and even if you’re not a Monmouth fan, it’s absolutely worth the read.

People throughout all walks of life face this addiction every day. Some fight it and fight it, but struggle to overcome it. Stories like this one that can give those people hope. A man that could have lost so much has overcome his addiction and is now a head coach at a Division I school.

Now that, my friends, is an awesome story.
