facebooktwitterreddit

In their first of two exhibition games in preparation for the World University Games, the Kansas Jayhawks got off to a lackluster start, but eventually came out with a 91-83 victory over Team Canada in front of 8,000 Jayhawk fans at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.

In a game the Jayhawks figured to dominate, it was Team Canada that threw the first punch, getting out to an early 10-point lead, and leading by 2 come halftime. Up by 5 after the third quarter, Frank Mason took the game over, scoring 17 points in the fourth quarter alone. Mason led all scorers with 28 points on 9 of 14 shooting. He also added 6 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Right behind Mason was senior forward Perry Ellis with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Wayne Selden scored 13 with 6 assists, and Jamari Traylor added 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks off the bench.

  • Last year, the Jayhawks were selected to represent the USA in this summer’s World University Games held in Gwangju, South Korea. This event is held every two years, and is a global competition for collegiate athletes to participate in. It is the second time that a school itself has represented the USA, with Northern Iowa doing so back in 2007. In previous years, Team USA was made up of a select group of players, with the 2013 team consisting of notable college stars like Doug McDermott, Luke Hancock, Sean Kilpatrick, and Yogi Ferrell.

The Jayhawks are going to be without sophomore Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk and freshman Cheick Diallo, who weren’t born in the US. Sophomore Devonte Graham and junior Brannen Greene also won’t be able to participate because they are both hurt.

Because the Jayhawks are representing the whole country, they can add anyone who is 25 years of age or younger, enrolled in at least one college class, and born in the United States. To fill out the roster, Kansas picked up Nic Moore of SMU, and Julian DeBose of Florida Gulf Coast. Of course, both players have ties to Bill Self, with Moore playing under one of Self’s mentors in Larry Brown, and DeBose playing for one of Self’s old assistant coaches Joe Dooley. Moore started and had 9 points and 5 assists in 29 minutes before fouling out, and DeBose came off the bench to play 9 minutes, and he added just 2 points.

It was also the first look at two heralded freshmen in Carlton Bragg and LaGerald Vick. Neither did anything too notable, with both of them coming off the bench to go 2 for 8 and add 4 points.

The Jayhawks will play another exhibition game on Friday against Team Canada before heading to South Korea on Sunday. From there, they will begin group play on Friday, July 3 with a showdown against Turkey at 10 pm central time. The Jayhawks will later play Brazil, Chile, Serbia, and then Switzerland to round out group play.
