The Big East underwent a major overhaul for 2014. There is no denying that Syracuse, UConn and Louisville will be missed, but when the Big East was formed in 1979 it was a conference focused on basketball.
This year, the Big East returned to that vision. For the ten schools that now make up the conference, basketball is the top draw on campus. None of these schools play Division 1A football. In addition, nine of the ten schools are united by their Catholic roots.
Those two factors give Big East fans a special bond and give the tournament a special feel.
Villanova will enter the tournament as the top seed, but Creighton has Doug McDermott, presumptive Naismith award winner, on their roster. As many as five other teams will head to New York City with hopes of getting off the bubble and into the Big Dance. For these reasons, this year’s Big East conference tournament will be another great chapter in the history of this great conference.
