In 1996, UConn and Georgetown both finished the regular season ranked in the AP top ten and were the top two seeds in the Big East conference tournament. The top seeds held form, and UConn met Georgetown in the conference tournament final.

The Hoyas were led by the spectacular Allen Iverson. The Huskies were led by the Big East player of the yearRay Allen. Ray Allen hit a runner in the lane as time expired to lift the Huskies to a 75-74 victory. This memorable matchup was the final conference game for both men.
