The Big East tournament moved to its permanent home in Madison Square Garden in 1983. St. John’s made the most of the bright lights and the big stage. Playing in their home city, St. John’s defeated Boston College by a score of 85-77 in the tournament final.

Brooklyn native Chris Mullin was named the MVP of the tournament in his home city. This was the first of three conference tournament championships that the Johnnies would win at the Garden.
