NCAA Basketball: Best remaining open coaching jobs?
4. Massachusetts Minutemen
The Massachusetts Minutemen ended its nine-year run under the direction of alumnus Derek Kellogg, following consecutive losing seasons. The Minutemen had moderate success with Kellogg at helm, including three straight 20-win campaigns (2010-2014). UMass’ best recent season came in 2013-14 when they went 24-9 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
UMass has had minimal success since John Calipari left the program at the conclusion of the 1996 campaign. The Minutemen have been to five NIT and one NCAA Tournament berths this century.
Massachusetts thought it had its next coach in Winthrop’s Pat Kelsey, who agreed to lead the program but backed out of the agreement prior to the official announcement by the school. The Minutemen went 15-18 overall and 4-14 in the A-10 in 2016-17. UMass should have nearly everyone back from last year.
