19. Weber State over North Carolina – 1999

Weber State has a history of some good tournament upsets, but at the time, the Wildcats were still a relatively unknown program. They had a similar record but North Carolina was a dark horse team to win the title.

The Wildcats entered the tournament with a 24-7 record, a seven-game win streak, and had won 10 of 11 games. North Carolina entered with a 24-9 record and were No. 13 in the AP poll.

The Tar Heels struggled against weaker teams throughout their non-conference schedule. Even though they finished non-conference games at 12-1, there were several close calls and single-digit wins against mid-major and small conference teams.

Weber State was playing great basketball down the stretch of the season and matched up well with a Tar Heel team that had under performed throughout the year based on their talent.

The Wildcats pulled off their second first round upset of a power conference team in five years. The No. 14 seeded Wildcats beat the No. 3 seeded Tar Heels, 76-74. North Carolina had a chance on a last second full-court pass, but the Wildcats were able to swat it away.
