Marquette Basketball: Player reviews for the 2017-18 season
By Brian Foley
G Andrew Rowsey (RS Sr.)
Stats: 20.5 pts – 4.8 ast – 3.0 reb – 42% FG – 90.2% FT – 41.5% 3PT
What went well: Scoring
Rowsey can get buckets with anyone in college basketball. He is one of five players in NCAA history to drop 1,000 points at two different schools. On Tuesday, he first broke Steve Novak’s program record for three-pointers in a single season (now 125), and then later topped Dwyane Wade’s record for points in a single season (now 716). He is a prolific shooter with unlimited range, crafty ball handling skills, and the absurd ability to pump fake defenders into the air.
For as good as a shooter and scorer as Rowsey is, ball handling might be where Marquette misses him most next season. Howard is an exceptional playmaker, but dribbling under pressure is not his strength (see the final minute of the Harvard game). Expect Marquette to get into the grad transfer guard market this spring so Howard can remain an off-ball scorer.
What to improve on: Defense
If Rowsey wants to play in high-level basketball leagues overseas, he has to improve his defense. He is already at a height disadvantage, but he does not help himself in other areas. He dies on pick and rolls, makes the wrong switches, and ball watches while his man slips away for an open three or a layup.
Rowsey papered over plenty of Marquette’s flaws this year with his incredible shot-making, but he also created gaping holes in the defense. No. 30 was an extremely fun player to watch at his best (which was quite often), but there may be a bit of the Ewing Theory involved here. Only time will tell.
Regardless, good luck to Andrew in his future endeavors. He will forever live in Marquette record books, and he made quite the splash in just two seasons in Milwaukee.
