Loyola Chicago: Clayton Custer

The run of a lifetime for the Loyola Ramblers is a credit to so many different factors. If not for Sister Jean, who knows what would have happened to this small university in Chicago. The position in the bracket certainly aided the Ramblers’ run as well, as the highest seed they needed to play was a three seed. Donte Ingram’s three with less than a second remaining in their first round game against Miami also got everything started.

But for Loyola, guard Clayton Custer meant everything to the Cinderella run. The junior was the consistency and stability the Ramblers needed, as well as the calm and collected voice down the stretch in three very tight games.

Custer was also named this year’s top mid-major player, according to the Chicago-Sun Times. His performance all season helped lead Loyola to a tournament bid and an impressive 11 seed. This paved the way for their run, knocking off four opponents on their way to winning the south region.

Custer totaled 61 points in five tournament games, leading Loyola scorers. What jumps out even more is how he was able to accomplish this so efficiently, taking no more than ten field goal attempts in a game. With talent and leadership on the floor, Custer is Loyola’s MVP who led them to their stunning final four appearance.
