NCAA Basketball: Ranking Grad Transfer Matt Mooney’s Top 5 Teams
1. Creighton Bluejays
When it comes to “need”, all five teams really could use Mooney, since they each lost their top scoring guard. But when it comes to which one gives Mooney the best chance at succeeding, Creighton rose to the top.
The Bluejays have consistently operated from the perimeter and did so this past year with Marcus Foster producing 20 points a night. He’s gone, but Khyri Thomas is the best returning guard from any of these teams involved, so Mooney can play off of him without an issue. The Bluejay senior is also an elite defender, alleviating responsibilities the Coyote transfer would have to deal with on the other end.
Something also to look at with these five programs is that none of them has a penciled in true point guard. It’s mainly combo guards that bring the ball up the court. The position that Mooney plays is important because he’s more of a natural shooting guard than a true distributor for others.
What clinched it for me is Greg McDermott, who has shown better than the other coaches that he can utilize guards to their maximum potential on a consistent basis. Mooney can become an immediate impact player for the Bluejays, without disputing the team’s offensive system.
