NCAA Basketball: Top 10 Players to Play for Mark Turgeon
10. Marlon Gurley – Jacksonville State Gamecocks (1999-2000)
Career stats: 13.5 ppg 3.2 rpg 2.1 apg
Starting things off is the best player Turgeon coached at his first stop. Jacksonville didn’t make the Big Dance under him, but they were competitive in the A-Sun Conference thanks to Gurley, a 6’1 guard who liked to shoot the three-pointer. He averaged over eight three-point attempts his first freshman year, making 35% of them.
9. Paul Miller – Wichita State Shockers (2002-2006)
Career stats: 10.0 ppg 5.5 rpg 0.8 apg
A four-year starter for the Shockers, Miller’s production gradually rose each season before being crowned the Missouri Valley Player of the Year in 2006, the same year where Wichita State made the Sweet Sixteen.
He had a big part in that run, averaging 13.7 ppg and 8.0 rpg in the 2006 NCAA Tournament. The 6’10, 250-pound center led the team in scoring that season, which could be described as Turgeon’s best coaching job to date.
8. Anthony Cowan – Maryland Terrapins (2017-)
Career stats: 13.0 ppg 4.1 rpg 4.4 apg
10 years from now, this list is likely to look very different thanks to the increased number of high-level recruits coming to Maryland. One of them is Cowan, who played at an All-Big Ten level this past season despite the team suffering from key injuries.
Assuming he stays with the Terrapins for the next couple of seasons, Cowan could be not only the star of the team but the premier point guard in the Big Ten. Just like another Maryland ball handler coming up on the list.
